The National Hospital Insurance Fund has been on the spotlight for sometime now following a corruption scandal that is been investigated.
As the investigations continue we delve into the life of one of the NHIF receptionist.We all know being a receptionist is more or less being a secretary meaning you dont earn as much m,oney to buy you a range Rover unless you are married to a billionare.
Well, one man going by the name Fredrick Sagwe is one of the NHIF receptionist but when you meet him at his office at the NHIF, you would brush him off as any other ‘poor’ reception in the country.
However, he is not the type of a man who would queue for public transport, neither is he the kind of man who would be stressed over rent at the end of the month like other ordinary Kenyans.
Behind the smiley ‘humble’ face of Fredrick Sagwe is a millionaire who has had a taste of good life, be it top of the range cars or houses.
Among his fleet of cars includes to of the range cars, Range Rovers and Toyota V8s.
He owns a number of houses valued at more than Ksh160 million, which he bought in between 2013 and 2017 at an upmarket estate in Athi River. This was after working for six years as a receptionist at NHIF, receiving a Ksh50,000 salary.
He graduated from United States International University in 2007 and joined NHIF thereafter. He has known any other place of work, other than the state insurer.
One of his houses, where he lives, valued at Ksh40 million, is envied by who is who in the upper class of city dwellers.
The father of three bought his first four houses in 2013, all valued at Ksh20 million, meaning he spent Ksh80 million to purchase non-commercial houses.
A part from the houses, the 39-year old has a chain of car and carpet-cleaning businesses across Nairobi valued at Ksh50 million, managed by his wife.
Currently he earns Ksh150,000 a month as salary.
He married in a lavish wedding held at Safari Park that cost a whooping Ksh25 million, beating most weddings of the who is who in the wealthy class.
One of the investigators, who is on his case, terms him as “a very polite person who sometimes tries to look like a modest man by driving a small car”.
He is among 20 suspects wanted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji over graft at NHIF.
However, while other officers connected to the graft were being arrested yesterday, he was not arrested.
Yesterday, former NHIF CEO and Devolution Secretary Simeon ole Kirgotty was arrested alongside Robert Mureithi (head of Webtribe) and Gilbert Gathuo (Head of ICT).
The insurer sent the current chief executive Geoffrey Mwangi on compulsory leave after he was apprehended alongside finance director Wilbert Kurgat for failing to provide documents required in a Ksh100 million corruption case.
Mwangi and Kurgat were on Wednesday released on a Ksh1 million bond each and a surety of similar a amount. Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi also gave them an option of Ksh500,000 cash bail.
Mr Mwangi was replaced with Mr Nicodemus Odongo who has been serving as the director in charge of strategy, planning and Marketing while Kurgat was replaced by Bernard Njenga, who has been the manager in charge of management and accounting.
