In her narration, Brian and other KIU students had hired a boat to have fun on the nearby islands when they saw the boat Irene was in capsize. Brian then took his friends ashore and then went back to rescue those in the sinking boat.

Irene said that Brian heard her distress call and saw the light on her phone that she was waving and he came right to where she was.

“He asked me for the phone, bag and then pulled me in. Then he tried to pull the lady who came grabbing on my hand and life jacket almost drowning me. I managed to bring her up to the boat but she died right there as part of her life jacket got stuck under the boat and she was too heavy,” she narrated.
