“Mkono wa serikali ni mrefu,” A female MP in trouble for insulting a journalist

Incidents of people attacking journalists for covering their dark side of deeds have been on the high rise, with the latest the attack on a Citizen TV journalist by Nairobi city askaris when he tried to cover a their bribery incident. Did you know that some politicians have also been attacking journalists?

The police are investigating Meru Woman Representative Kawira Mwangaza who allegedly attacked  Boniface Mwongera, a journalist from Weru TV.

The Parliamentarian recorded a statement with the police at Capitol Hill police station on Monday.

She later proceeded to the Cyber Crime department at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) with the device.

Boniface also recorded his statement over the incident and accused Mwangaza of insulting him.

The police stated that the investigations will determine whether or not to charge the lawmaker.

She is accused of causing a chaotic scene at the Milimani Law Courts when she confiscated journalist Mwongera’s phone because of covering the proceedings of a case involving her.

Kawira was in court for the hearing of a suit she had filed against a musician for defamation.

The MP sprung into the spotlight in 2017 when she gifted a Ksh15 million car to her then-boyfriend Murega Baichu who is also a musician.

After a Few months, Mwangaza and her Meru-based musician husband walked down the isle in what appeared to be an invites only wedding.

Baichu is reported to be the owner of Baite TV, a vernacular TV station.

Most journalists are attacked when trying to cover incidences of these politicians who normally feel like the content is not worth going on air.

Sometimes they have to lock some journalists out of their events on fear of exposing their bad sayings from the meetings.

However, journalists remain the voices of those who lack voice and have to watch dog the deeds of these leaders. Do you think it is right to attack a journalist on claims that he or she was filming the content you were not aware of?
