Liverpool Jurgen Klopp allowed two star players to ‘cheat’ against Tottenham

That is according to former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder turned pundit Danny Murphy. The Reds’ victory maintained their 100 per cent start to the Premier League season.

Goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino were enough to see off a poor Spurs side. Liverpool could easily have scored more than they did but wasteful finishing saved Tottenham’s blushes.

Murphy has been critical of Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, claiming the Argentine’s tactics were to blame for his team’s defeat. But he has also praised Klopp for giving two of his attackers, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, plenty of freedom to trouble the opposition.
Murphy says Mane and Salah were allowed to “cheat” by not having to track back too often.

“They were playing against a Liverpool side with a lot of confidence, but Klopp gave his players the freedom to play,” Murphy told talkSPORT.

“He gave Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane the freedom to cheat a bit and stay up the pitch – that’s tactical and Klopp deserves credit for that.

“I think too many people dismiss tactics generally, but that was the most clear-cut game I’ve seen in a long time where tactics made the difference.”

Victory over Tottenham means Liverpool sit below Chelsea at the top of the table on goal difference.

Jurgen Klopp’s side begin their Champions League campaign on Tuesday when they welcome Paris Saint-Germain to Anfield.

Striker Firmino is a doubt for the clash after sustaining an eye injury in the win over Spurs.

Southampton will look to be the first side to take points off Liverpool in the league this Saturday.

Mark Hughes’ side have four points from four games so far this term.

They visit Brighton this evening in the final game of the weekend’s action.
