Oklahoma Panhandle Thanksgiving Snow: What Drivers Need to Know

Snow

Amarillo, TX – Travelers across the Oklahoma Panhandle should prepare for potentially slick roads as light snow is forecast Thanksgiving morning. While accumulations will be minor, road conditions could pose a safety risk during holiday travel.

The National Weather Service predicts a 10-20% chance of snow beginning Wednesday night and continuing through Thanksgiving morning. Precipitation could start as rain before transitioning to snow, increasing the likelihood of icy conditions on roadways such as U.S. Highway 54 and U.S. Highway 287. Winds may also pick up, further complicating travel. While snowfall is expected to stay under 0.5 inches, drivers are urged to stay cautious.

Thanksgiving Day itself will see improving weather, with partly sunny skies and temperatures reaching a high of 51°F. Evening temperatures will drop to the low 30s, so any residual moisture on roads could freeze, creating additional travel risks.

As the holiday week progresses, Amarillo will experience milder weather, with highs climbing to the low 60s by Tuesday under mostly sunny skies. Wednesday brings partly sunny conditions and a high of 65°F, providing a reprieve for travelers heading home after Thanksgiving.

Officials recommend checking weather updates and road conditions frequently, particularly if traveling during early Thanksgiving morning. Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready, and give yourself extra time to reach your destination safely.

Be sure to follow the National Weather Service for live updates, and consult local transportation authorities for roadway conditions.
