Arcadi Navarro, a specialist in genetics claimed that it is possible to create a “twin” of arguably the world’s greatest player, Lionel Messi, with all the available current techniques.

The Barcelona ace is having one of the best campaigns of his career and rescued Catalan giants several times from the jaws of defeat throughout this season. He has already scored 39 goals for Barcelona and provided 15 assists to his teammates.

Messi will turn 32 this June and it is hardly surprising that Barcelona president, Josep Maria Bartomeu has already started the planning of life after Lionel Messi.

Genetic specialist and head of the European Genome Archive, Arcadi Navarro, explained on the Cadena SER programme Què t’hi jugues that with current technology it would be possible to create a clone of Barcelona’s Argentine striker, Lionel Messi.

“Yes, we could clone Messi with the current techniques and we would get something very similar to him. It would be like as if two twins had been born and one had been frozen 20 or 30 years ago.”

However, he also elaborated that:

“Messi is Messi and isn’t who he is only because of genetics. He is a product of his environment, of growing up in La Masia, of the hormonal treatment he received…

“What genetics does is to give a potential, as was the case with Messibut whether that is fulfilled or not comes down to the circumstances and what happens around us.”

Of course, that also means a certain Cristiano Ronaldo could also be cloned, and the comparison debate could start all over again. Poor kids!

The football world reacted explosively..
