So it looks like Filip Benkovic will be working with Brendan Rodgers again next season after all?
The Northern Irishman brought Benkovic to Celtic last summer, signing the young Croatian on loan from Leicester City. And the 21-year-old, who cost the foxes a hefty £13 million wasted no time in establishing himself as a key player north of the border.
In short, Benkovic looked a cut above in Celtic colours. No wonder the supporters, and Rodgers himself, were dreaming of somehow pulling off a permanent deal for the former Dinamo Zagreb starlet.
“The likelihood is that this is a very difficult deal but if there was an opportunity it was one we would look at for sure,” he told the Scottish in November.
With Rodgers on his way out of Parkhead, it seems increasingly unlikely that Benkovic will still be wearing green and white next season.
Rodgers has not just joined any old club after all. He is the new manager of Leicester City, the side that sent Benkovic on loan to Celtic last summer.
Considering the centre-back was one of the first names on Rodgers’ team sheet when fit, it would be a major surprise if the former Liverpool boss did not make Benkovic a key part of his immediate plans at the King Power Stadium.
Leicester need someone to partner Harry Maguire, with Jonny Evans struggling to convince and Wes Morgan past his best. Benkovic looks like that man.
