After months of speculations, half-truths, threats and lobbying, the leading presidential contenders, Azimio’s candidate Raila Odinga and his closest rival from Kenya Kwanza William Ruto, have finally made their choices for running mates.
With Ruto gambling with Mathira MP and one of his key loyalists Rigathi Gachagua and Odinga going for the Iron Lady Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, it is now up to the two camps to hit the ground running and amass as many votes as possible in an election that is deemed too-close-to-call.
However, for the Azimio camp, the choice to pick Karua came at the expense of losing one of their key principals, Wiper supremo Kalonzo Musyoka, who held a parallel event where he named his own deputy despite being promised the role of Chief Cabinet Secretary.
Kalonzo, who had threatened to exit the mega coalition in the event he fails to be nominated for the joint ticket, will now square off with the two top contenders in the race that has now taken a new twist.
This now begs the question, which among these formations do you think stands the best chance to clinch the presidency? Could Kalonzo’s quest for presidency mean Kenya is headed for the first election run-off?
Meanwhile, here are the stories making headlines on Opera News today:
