Times have indeed changed in our time, with life priorities shifting from humanitarian causes to materialistic ones.
In the previous decades, self actualization was determined by the impact one had on the betterment of the world.
For example, Nelson Mandela was recognized as a self-actualized individual due to his sacrifice in liberating South Africa from the Apartheid era.
Mother Teresa was also regarded as self-actualized due to her selfless service to the poor and sick in the Indian society.
Today, however, we measure one’s achievement of all human needs by the amount of money they are making, and more importantly, spending.
The persons currently racing for this honour are the richest men in the world, led by the likes of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Tesla’s Elon Musk.
The two have taken competition out of this world, literally. This is through their space ventures, with Bezos having blasted off to the edge of space this week.
Musk, on the other hand, is engaged in exploring the moon through his Space X project.
We know it is their money, but could they consider channelling some of it to charity, especially now that poor nations need all the help they can get in securing COVID vaccines?
Just a thought.
