Light Aircraft Crashes Causing Deaths; Raila Odinga Finally Declares His Wish Ahead Of 2022 Election & Uhuru Managing Raila to Run Govt Smoothly

Good morning,

President Uhuru Kenyatta will today lead Kenyans in marking 58 years of self-rule and for the first time, in Kisumu county.

The President arrived in Kisumu for a three-day visit on Sunday which has seen the city reportedly bask in the glory of hosting the Madaraka Day celebrations.

The visit by the Head of State has significance in the region politically and economically. For instance, to the excitement of local residents, Uhuru launched what has since been dubbed as the “Handshake Projects.”

Some of these projects that Uhuru was to launch include; commissioning of the refurbished Mv Uhuru at the Kisumu Inland Port, Nakuru-Kisumu meter gauge railway and Lake Victoria Basin Commission. However, the launch was called off last minute.

According to Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, hosting the celebrations was a combined effort with the national government to spur economic growth in the county and position it as an attractive investment and tourism destination in the western circuit.

As a result, hotels have also been overbooked in the lakeside city with high-end ones such as Ciala Resort, Acacia Premier, Grand Royal Swiss, Joventure and Divine Homes recording more than 90 per cent occupancy.

The celebrations come at a time when the President and Opposition leader Raila Odinga have been working together under the March 2018 Handshake which has seen the latter spare no effort to underline the political significance of the visit.

In fact, about a year ago, the former premier’s brother, Oburu Odinga is on record saying that since they had the backing of the President, they had a shot at the Presidency come 2022.

Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye will grace the event as the chief guest at the newly constructed Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium at the Mamboleo ASK grounds.

Only 3,000 people will be allowed in the stadium in compliance with the covid-19 protocols.

Happy Madaraka Day.

Uhuru managing Raila to run government smoothly

President Uhuru Kenyatta allowing ODM leader Raila Odinga to receive the visiting Burundian President is a boost for the former premier’s political strategy in terms of perception. But in terms of reality, it is highly doubtable if there are gains that come with it.

Raila has a bigger international stature than anybody else. Burundi is not one of those serious states; actually, it is more or less a basket case.

Receiving a Burundian president will not earn Raila much in terms of stature and international connections as he already has those. So for public relations purposes, the reception is significant, but in terms of real value, I doubt.

What I see is Uhuru managing Raila so that he finishes his term without trouble. Look at the Kisumu stadium; can you compare it to what has been done in Kakamega?
