Eastleigh, Mombasa Old Town Placed Under Lockdown as Coronavirus Cases Hit 581

There are 47 new coronavirus cases in the country, the Health Ministry has announced.

The total number of confirmed cases now stands at 581.  32 were from Mombasa, while 11 are from Nairobi. Busia had 2 cases, Kiambu 1 case, and Kwale 1 case.

The Mombasa cases are concentrated in Old Town. Eastleigh has 5 additional cases.

Of the new 47 cases, 31 are male, and 16 are female. Eight persons have been discharged, bringing the total number of recoveries to 190. Meanwhile, there have been two more deaths, bring the total number of fatalities to 26. The two new deaths were from Mombasa and passed away at home.

Due to the increasing infection numbers, The government has announced the cessation of movement in and out of Eastleigh and Mombasa Old Town as of May 6 at 7 PM.

The cessation will last 15 days, coupled with the closure of markets and eateries.

Further, the Ministry announced that the cost of quarantine and testing will be catered for by the government going forward.
