Legend Okwemba Opens Up on His 2011 Sacrifice That Saved AFC Leopards From Relegation

AFC Leopards legend Charles Okwemba came out crystal clear on why he dumped Posta Rangers and joined the then reeling Ingwe.

Okwemba made a total sacrifice and came to the rescue of his heart and blood club, Leopards, who were at the verge of being relegated to the lower league.

The Mailmen, however, were enjoying a good run during that period, at were, at one point, leading the league table. But the 40-year-old midfielder could not stomach seeing his boyhood club facing humiliation.

For instance, in the season 2009, Ingwe finished 13th, only five points away from relegation.

“I was an employee of Posta and playing for Rangers FC but I would go watch Ingwe matches when the guys were losing almost every match,” Okwemba told a local publication on Monday.

“What hurt me most was seeing players laughing outside with their girlfriends as if nothing has happened. It was clear to me that they did not understand what it meant playing for a team like Leopards.”

“Despite having a good season at Rangers, I could not stomach the pain of seeing Ingwe struggling to get results. I made a tough decision to ditching my team to go and salvage Leopards and went on to advise the management of players who did not have a genuine love for the club.

“It turned out to be a good season as we finished in the fifth position and I managed to finish second in the Most Valuable Player Award and Midfielder of the Year Award respectively behind eventual winner Kevin Kimani who was playing for Mathare United.”

Okwemba came as a game-changer for Leopards and helped them FKF Shield Cup twice. He last played for Vihiga United before hanging up his boots in 2018.
