Four Senators Stuck Abroad After Exhausting ‘Pocket Money’

Several government officials are stuck in Berlin, Germany, after a meeting they were to attend was called off due to the global coronavirus scourge.

According to Senate speaker Ken Lusaka, four senators are among those trying to find their way back home as the number of flights leaving Germany dwindles.

Lusaka added that the legislators were making travel arrangements on their own, with The Star reporting that the politicians had already been issued travel facilitation funds, but they had already used the monies.

Additionally, the daily reported that the stranded leaders, including Kirinyaga senator Charles Kibiru, Bomet senator Christopher Langat, and Nyandarua senator Mwangi Githiomi, had run into accommodation challenges, after the hotel where they were supposed to stay, for a week while attending a trade conference, refused to refund their boarding fee, even after the event was cancelled.

So far, over 3000 people have died of the infection worldwide, with Germany being one of the hardest-hit European countries as the virus finds its way around the world.

As of Tuesday, 188 cases of the infection had been reported in the country.

On Tuesday, MPs were forced to return allowances issued to them for a planned trip to New York, which was also cancelled over Coronavirus fears.

The 15 legislators were set to represent the country in the UN Status of Women Conference, at a cost of Ksh19.8 million.

According to Parliament guidelines, each member is entitled to about Ksh120,000 per day for American trips.
