Sonko Reveals His Next Move After Uhuru’s Nairobi Takeover

Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, on Thursday moved to demystify his fate after he, on Tuesday, surrendered the most crucial functions of the county to the national government, a move that sparked rumors that he was rendered jobless as a result.

In a lengthy social media post, Sonko clarified that the deal with President Uhuru Kenyatta did not strip him of all his powers, noting that together with his government, he would lead the capital city towards achieving all set objectives, that do not fall under the planning, public works, health, and transport roles.

In particular, the governor pledged his commitment towards regenerating Nairobi’s reputation as an environmental forward city.

”As part of this renewed agenda and purpose, my Government will ensure that Nairobi regains its famed status as the “Green City in the Sun” among other targets that we have set for ourselves,” Sonko’s statement read in part.

The county head revealed that his government would still assist the national government in the delivery of the handed over roles, explaining that benchmarking exercises conducted around the world indicated that the city would thrive if managed collaboratively.

”From these case studies, we established that cities and metropolis, the size of Nairobi, are best served jointly by devolved units and Central Governments,” the embattled politician noted.

According to Sonko, the Uhuru takeover would accelerate Nairobi’s economic growth, owing to the added resources and competencies.

”We believe our bold decision to collaborate with the National Government through the transfer of some of our functions will create positive governance precedence that will help strengthen devolution,” the leader wrote.

”I thank His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Jubilee Administration for the commitment they have shown in ensuring that the people of Nairobi get the best services from their Government,” he concluded.

Other functions the governor is still in charge of include agriculture, air and noise pollution management, animal control and welfare, Early childhood development and polytechnics, fire fighting and disaster, drugs and pornography control, and, public entertainment and liquor licensing.
