EMBU MCAs Furious After Being Ignored at Chuka BBI Meeting

Embu Members of the County Assembly are breathing fire after what they have termed as ‘an embarrassment’ by the organizers of the Chuka BBI meeting.

The furious MCAs expressed disappointment over the fact that they were only asked to stand, wave to the crowd and go back home without presenting their views or forwarding a memorandum of the proposals they would wish incorporated in the final BBI draft.

They, therefore, said they would only attend the BBI popularisation campaign if they would be guaranteed not to be treated as flower girls.

This closely follows Embu’s speaker Josiah Thiriku’s previous vent that assemblies are key pillars in the push for constitutional change yet organizers of BBI rallies have sidelined members.

Muminji MCA Newton Kariuki said the regional consultative meeting which brought together stakeholders from Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Meru turned out to be a photo session and fashion show where the legislators only stood to be seen, then later they were ignored.

The Runyenjes Central MCA warned against forcing leaders to attend the Meru BBI rally, saying the meeting was not a priority to the people.

Amidst the BBI inclusivity wars, Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi has maintained that only leaders from Mount Kenya region will be allowed to speak during Meru BBI rally. He said visitors will have to sit down and listen.

Murungi said the rally will be a mega rally from the previous ones. He added that there will be no chaos in the rally since the resolutions will originate from the locals.

Kiraitu also urged BBI opposers to keep away from the rally. “If you think that BBI is a waste of time, please stay at home. Keep away and do not come to Kinoru stadium,” Kiraitu said.

The rally had initially been scheduled for February 14 but was postponed after the death of former president Daniel Moi.
