A rich and popular family in Kisii County risks having its vast estate auctioned over debts.

Opera News has established that the famous Moracha family risks losing its impressive estate which includes a mega building based at the heart of Kisii.

In an advert in one of the Kenya dailies, the Kisii town-based building is scheduled to be auctioned on February 28, 2020.

“All that parcel of land known as Title Number Kisii/Municipality/Block 195, Mocha Place Kisii-Kisumu road registered in the name of Josphat Mwangi Moracha g/t Jipa Oil Company Ltd. It lies directly opposite Tuskys Supermarket’s parking with an estimated rental income of Sh4.97 million,” read part of the advert.

According to the advert, the building has a total of six floors with a wide parking space.

The commercial building is associated with the Moracha family whose kin, Henry Moracha, is a close ally to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga.

Mr Moracha was in 2013 elected as the Ward Representative of Bassi Central ward a position he served for a full term.

During his tenure, Mr Moracha was also elected by his fellow ward representatives as the Majority Chief Whip in the Kisii County Assembly.

However, in the 2017 elections, the ODM candidate failed to clinch the position and lost to a newcomer in the political arena.

It will be interesting to see how the family fights to keep the estate.
