Sonko’s Planned Trip to Dubai Halted

Troubled Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko’s planned trip to Dubai has been halted.

This is after court on Thursday declined to release Sonko’s passports.

Sonko on Wednesday made an application to the court asking for the release of his passports.

His legal team explained the move was to enable him travel to the United Arab Emirates for official duty.

In his application, the embattled county chief stated that he had been invited to attend the tenth session of the World Urban Forum which takes place from the 8th to 13th February 2020.

The court also heard that Sonko is willing to submit himself to the conditions that may be deemed appropriate by the court as pertains to the release of his travel documents.

However, the prosecution objected the application saying they require time to verify the documents attached in his application and the validity of his letter of invitation

The court was told that Sonko had paid for the trip using his cards with the prosecution adding that as a proof  he was travelling for personal luxury as opposed to official duty.

The court while granting Sonko bail in December last year required him to submit his passports to the court.

The court also ruled that he should seek permission before travelling outside the country.

Sonko is facing graft charges in the court.
