Somber mood hits the Country following the death of Kenyan’s second president Mzee Daniel Toroich Arap Moi.
Moi was popularly known to Kenyans as Nyayo, as he often said he was following in the footsteps of the first President, Jomo Kenyatta.
Let’s look at his lifestyle that has kept him alive for long.
Kenya’s second president, despite living a private life, he has for a long time been believed to be living healthy by having vegetables from his vast Kabarak farm as his meal.
One would, therefore, wonder how he appears to be so strong for a very long time despite his old age.
In his 24 years of ruling the country, he was a man everyone revered and feared. Nobody wanted to cross his path for fear of facing the music.
Fashion Sense
The late president had a unique fashion sense, every public function he attended, he would rock in simple and but classic outfits.
Mr. Stephen Kipkering Sugut, a retired presidential security officer, says Moi transformed his lifestyle to date. He served in the elite General Service Unit for many years and was one of the aides who handled the President’s clothes.
He also had different dress codes for different occasions.
“It was official attire when he attended church and State functions. He would don designer-made short-sleeved shirts during harambees, tree-planting or trips to hot zones like Coast or North-Eastern provinces,” he says. And when the President traveled out of the country, he took with his staff to ensure correct dressing. He had the official, ceremonial and dinner clothing explains Sugut.
Death
He has died at the age of 95 and will be remembered as having ruled Kenya with an iron fist for 24 years before being removed by President Mwai Kibaki in 2002.
