Powerful Mt Kenya Leaders Hatch Plan to Extend Uhuru’s Reign

A clique of powerful Mt Kenya politicians have revealed an intricate plan that will see President Kenyatta remain at the centre of power even after his term ends in 2022.

While the idea of President Kenyatta extending his stay in power has been entertained before, it would be made apparent by the President’s own bosom buddy- David Murathe.

In his press address that came just five days before the historic truce between President Kenyatta and his erstwhile nemesis Raila Odinga,  Murathe revealed that  President Kenyatta was “going nowhere at 60 when Mr Odinga was running for President at 75.”

In the years that followed, powerful politicians from Mt Kenya have come to tinker with the idea, culminating to an endorsement by former Secretary to the Cabinet and now Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia.

Wednesday, January 29, Kimemia stated that President Kenyatta was too young to exit national politics, adding that he must be in the next Government.

Among the reasons Kimemia mentioned as the motivation behind the President’s extended term is to represent the interests of the region.

Kimemia, who chairs the consortium of 10 Mt Kenya counties, stated the region would be routing to have the President stay for longer.

This statement comes just weeks after Deputy President Dr William Ruto remarked that the President would not be seeking to stay in power after 2022.

Speaking at a funeral ceremony of Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua’s mother, DP Ruto stated that Jubilee Party was not interested in creating a position for Kenyatta beyond his second term.

However, the bond between the President and his Deputy has lost its adhesiveness in the past few years, depicting a marriage in disrepair.

While the President maintains a full commitment to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), his Deputy has always had the suspicion that the peace commitment had been hijacked by ODM leader Raila Odinga.

A parallel BBI meeting organized by DP Ruto-allied legislators has been cancelled after Tangatanga made a surprise move to support the initiative.
