Outrage as KQ Declines to Cancel Flights to China Amid Coronavirus Scare

Kenya Airways evoked the wrath of scared Kenyans on Wednesday, after announcing that the airline would not cancel flights to Coronavirus hit China, despite other carriers such as British Airways making the cautionary move.

Kenya’s envoy to China, Sarah Serem, had Wednesday morning indicated that halting movement to and from China would be the best approach to keeping Kenyans protected from the scourge, which has claimed over 130 lives so far.

The loss-making company, however, said that the China route would remain active as the airline analyzed the situation further.

This was a move that Kenyans did not take lightly, especially in light of the questionable status of the country’s health sector.

Allowing the country more exposure to the highly contagious virus would, therefore, mean a fresh health crisis, in a nation that is already grappling with the deadly cancer disease.

Other netizens felt that the government was more focused on earning money in terms of air tickets at the expense of citizens.

Further, Kenyans criticized Kenya’s high dependence on Chinese support, noting that pausing operations on the route would mean bringing the country’s economy to a halt.

By Wednesday, Kenya had registered one suspected case of the China Coronavirus.

This was in a student who had flown to the country from China on Tuesday, and who exhibited symptoms of ailment which led to his admission at the Kenyatta National Hospital isolation unit.
