Addressing the press on Tuesday afternoon, the leaders led by Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen, National Assembly Chief Whip Benjamin Washiali and Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika revealed that they were ready for the BBI meetings which have been planned across the country.

The leaders announced that they were going to participate and contribute towards the success of the already organized BBI rallies across the country, beginning with Mombasa on 25th of this month.

However, the leaders insisted they were not going to allow any usage of public funds in popularising the initiative.

According to Senator Murkomen, the leaders were opposed to the use of public funds in organizing the said rallies unless the same was approved by parliament or the county assemblies.

He maintained that the rallies should be funded through personal contributions from political leaders and other interested parties.

“We are opposed to the use of public funds in the organized BBI rallies unless appropriated by parliament or county assemblies. Our participation and organization of BBI rallies shall be through personal contributions,” stated Murkomen.

The leaders insisted that the entire BBI process should be driven in an open and transparent manner by the gazetted committee to avoid scenarios where some leaders could hijack it for their personal political gains.

Their concerns come just 10 days after their patron leader, William Ruto questioned the use of public resources at the hurriedly convened public barazas in the name of popularizing BBI.

Ruto remarked that there was no need for the ongoing political mobilisation as no one was opposed to the initiative.

“What are all these campaigns for? Who do they want to persuade? Is it a way of misusing government resources?” posed Ruto recently while in Vihiga county.

The DP maintained there was no need for using public resources on the BBI as the entire country supported it.

Ruto together with his legislators said it was unbelievable that billions of shillings were being wasted on matters to do with the BBI yet no one has objected to its recommendations.
