Broke Mike Sonko Wears Ksh80K T-shirt to Court

For a county head, who two weeks ago claimed to be too broke to fend for his family, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s choice of attire tells a lot about his financial situation’s truth.

The embattled politician on Tuesday arrived for a court session in Voi draped in a designer T-shirt, drawn from his favourite Versace clothing line.

A spot check by Opera News on the price of the garment, on online retail store E-bay, revealed that the governor had to part with at least KsH 80,000, to purchase the animal print vintage piece.

Sonko had, on Jan. 8, cried foul over a move by the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) to freeze nine of his bank accounts, saying that he was left penniless since his monthly salary could no longer be processed through his preferred banking institutions.

The ARA move came shortly after the politician was arrested and charged with graft and abuse of office.

During his dramatic arrest on Dec. 10, the flamboyant county boss was dressed in a Ksh 53,000 T-shirt, also by Versace.

Sonko’s flashy taste in fashion is only rivalled by his Mombasa counterpart Hassan Joho, who on Friday shocked Kenyans after stepping out in a Ksh. 137,500 Versace sweater.

Like Sonko, Joho is known for his insatiable appetite for designer wear and boasts of a wardrobe comprised of heftily priced garments, such as T-shirts, sneakers, and boots that cost anything from Ksh 50,000.

In August, he had been caught on camera rocking a Ksh. 53,000 T-shirt while cuddling American socialite Paris Hilton.

Joho broke the internet in July 2019, when he stepped out in a Ksh23 million designer watch.
