Babu Owino Charged With Attempted Murder, Misuse of Firearm

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino

Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino has been charged with attempted murder and disorderly behavior while carrying a firearm.

Babu, who was arraigned on Monday to answer to charges related to the shooting of Felix Orinda (DJ Evolve) last weekend, has pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor opposed bail for Babu, with the charge of attempted murder carrying a penalty of life imprisonment if the suspect is found guilty.

The controversial MP is suspected of shooting Mr Orinda twice in the neck at the upmarket B-Club in Kilimani, Nairobi.

The lawmaker was transferred from Kilimani Police Station to Gigiri Police Station, over the weekend due to the high number of visitors he was receiving.

“He was transferred to Gigiri to avoid slowing down investigations because people were insisting on speaking to him. At Gigiri is where other formalities and his fingerprints were taken,” his Lawyer Cliff Ombeta said.

Meanwhile, Orinda is still admitted to Nairobi Hospital having undergone surgeries to remove a bullet that was lodged in his neck.

According to the family, his first surgery was successful and surgeons removed the bullet and he is scheduled to undergo a second surgery on Monday.

“He seems to be still in shock. He only says that justice will prevail,” one of Orinda’s friends was quoted by The Standard.

A CCTV footage courtesy of K24 shows Babu and the victim in the company of some people a few seconds before the shooting.

“He drew his pistol and shot the DJ in the neck. The victim was rushed to Nairobi Hospital in serious condition by the management of the club,” a police report said in part.

Ombeta, who is representing Babu, insists that the lawmaker was provoked which is what led to the shooting.
