EDITORIAL: Letter To New Sports Permanent Secretary Joseph Okudo

Dear Mr. Joseph Okudo, Congratulations on your new post as the Permanent Secretary for Sports.

As in any job, there are expectations and responsibilities and I am confident that you are fully aware of your responsibilities.

However, this letter is meant to remind you of what we expect from you. Below are three issues, among a myriad of others, we, the sports lovers, expect you to address.

Bail Out Teams When Times Get Hard

Over the past few years, most of our national teams have had to postpone training due to a lack of funds. Harambee Starlets have been outperforming our East African neighbours with limited training time so imagine how they would fair given world-class preparations sir.

The same applies to the volleyball teams especially the women team. Also, almost all teams in the Kenya Premier League are operating on tight budgets while one has already been relegated due to the same.

Bailing them out with the Sports funds kitty would be a very nice gesture to start your reign. We have hopes.

Finalise The Nyayo National Stadium Renovations

For three years, the Nyayo National Stadium has been closed for renovations. We fully understand that the stadium needs an upgrade but we still can’t explain why the process is taking eternity.

With Nyayo closed, the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani is the only other stadium in Nairobi that is up to standard and is being overused. Please work on the completion of the Nyayo Stadium and while at it look into the City Stadium too!

Cut Out The Doping Cases Among Our Athletes

While Kenyan athletes have been in the headlines for the right reasons, the last few years have seen some of them in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.

Doping has crept its way in the Kenyan sports scene and it is not good for our image. It would be highly appreciated if you took it upon yourself to see that the vice gets eliminated completely.

Today, Eliud Kipchoge has, almost single handedly, put our country on the world list as home of legends. What with his nomination for a prestigious award alongside greats like football star Lionel Messi, golf star Tiger Woods among other world greats.
