Fresh details have emerged on Thursday January 2nd Al- Shabaab attack on a Lamu-bound bus.
Witness accounts in the area reveal that at least five buses were en route Lamu at the time of the attack by suspected militants.
Passengers from the buses behind are said to have disembarked and ran into the bushes after the first bus came under attack.
One of the buses is suspected to be burnt after it attempted to escape the militants by driving through rugged terrain.
Police have confirmed that three people are dead from the incident.
Scores more are nursing injuries after jumping off the moving buses.
Gunshots rent the air in Nyongoro area near Witu town as the militants raced against time following information that police officers were headed to the scene.
Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia is yet to confirm whether the security agencies managed to neutralize the militants.
Other passengers in the convoy of buses are reported to be safe after the bus drivers abandoned the journey to park at Minjila and Witu towns.
