The 4-2-1-3 Formation That Arsenal Should Start Against Chelsea

Arsenal will welcome Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday in what will be the first home match under new head coach Mikel Arteta. The Gunners drew 1-1 in the last match away to Bournemouth.

Below, we look at how Arsenal could line up.

Defense

Bernd Leno has been Arsenals best player this season and will start in goal. With Sead Kolasinac and Hector Bellerin still recovering from injuries, academy graduates Bukayo Saka and Ainsley Maitland Niles should occupy the full-back positions.

Calum Chambers missed the match against Bournemouth with a suspension but he should slot right in at center back. Mikel Arteta has a decision to make on who to partner Chambers but David Luiz’s superior passing rage should see him picked ahead of Sokratis.

Granit Xhaka may be angling for a move away from Arsenal but he is the team’s best central midfielder which means he will probably start. Lucas Torreira has been a revelation at defensive midfield.

The Uruguayan International is most comfortable while deployed in a double pivot and his best partner has been Granit Xhaka.

Ahead of the two, Mesut Ozil comes in to play in his preferred #10 role.

Alexander Lacazette was wasteful in the draw with Bournemouth and it would not be a surprise to see him dropped to the bench. Pierre Aubameyang scored the lone goal last time out from the left-wing but he could see himself drafted back into the striking role against Chelsea.

Gabriel Martinelli missed on Boxing Day with a slight injury but should he be fit, he will start on the left-wing while the clubs record signing Nicolas Pepe plays on the right.

Starting XI: 4-2-1-3 Leno, Niles, Saka, Chambers, Luiz, Torreira, Xhaka, Ozil, Pepe, Martinelli, Aubameyang.
