The 2019 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results are finally out.

Education CS George Magoha released the outcome of the test which was taken by 699,745 students from across the country at the KNEC Grounds on Wednesday.

The top candidate in the examination has been named as Norman Wabuko Tony of Kapsabet Boys who scored 87.159 points, followed by Barasa Maryann Njeri 87.087, Aboge David Odhiambo 87. 080, Anthony Awuor 87.00, Natasha Wawira 86.961, Kizito Ezra, 86.960, Hellen Njoki 86.914, Siele Chelangat 86.900, and Laura Chelangat Ruto 86.56.

The exam, in its 31st year, was administered in 10,287 centres, where different candidates sat about 74 papers under 30 subjects.

51 per cent of the candidates were male, while 49 per cent were female.

627 students scored the A plain grade, while 5,796 scored A-.

Three examiners passed away during the exam period, acting KNEC CEO Mercy Karogo revealed Wednesday.

Distribution of exam materials was significantly affected by heavy rains that pounded the country in November, completely cutting off some flood-prone areas after roads and bridges were swept away.

The marking of the examination was slowed down by go-slows by teachers charged with grading the papers, who claimed that they were subjected to deplorable working conditions while marking the test, and who had also demanded a pay increase.

Kisii and Migori Counties recorded the highest number of irregularities during the exam period that ran from Nov. 4 to Nov. 27.

Some of the notable irregularities include a case where some 11 people were arrested for impersonating KCSE candidates in Kisii County.

Further, several candidates fell ill during the exam period after reportedly coming into contact with a toxic chemical (Xylene) during the Chemistry paper practicals, an occurrence that the government vehemently denied.

In 2018, Juliet Owino from Pangani Girls emerged the top candidate in the KCSE test.

During his address on Wednesday, Magoha expressed his enthusiasm over the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), noting that his Ministry had already begun distributing textbooks to schools around the country to the same effect.

He further issued a stern warning to individuals sabotaging the education of the girlchild, by impregnating school girls or marrying them off in their teens, vowing that the government will crack down on such individuals.
