Judge Rejects Suit Seeking to Stop Sonko’s Impeachment

Will Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko survive? Well, maybe his latest scriptures, praise and worship songs are his only saviour!

The County chief has been dealt another blow after High Court Judge Weldon Korir, on Monday, declined to stop an alleged plan to impeach him.

An application filed by two Nairobi-based activists, George Bush and Lawrence Oyugi of Concerned Citizens Alliance, was dismissed until a formal application is lodged.

The judge directed the two to file a formal application in regard to the planned impeachment.

They had asked the court to grant an order stopping the said impeachment, saying that some members of the Nairobi County Assembly were planning to kick Sonko out of office.

In addition, Sonko’s planned appearance before a Voi Court in an assault case facing him might just go ahead.

This is after the Judge further declined to stop the criminal proceedings against Sonko following his arrest on December 6, 2019.

It was reported that Sonko assaulted a senior police officer at the time of his arrest and is expected to appear before the court on Wednesday to face the charges.

Sonko is also facing a Ksh.357 million graft case.

He was granted a Ksh 15 million cash bail on Wednesday last week after spending five days in police custody, two of which were spent at Kenyatta National Hospital after he fell sick while at Kamiti Maximum Prison, where he had been remanded.
