Corruption charges

Sonko has denied multiple charges of corruption preferred against him by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

This was after DPP Noordin Haji revealed that the Governor had masterminded the theft of at least Ksh357 million from Nairobi County Government coffers.

The Governor was arraigned Monday at Milimani law courts where he was represented by a whopping battery of 12 lawyers consisting of prominent legislators.

Dramatic Arrest

Sonko was arrested Friday December 6 en route Mombasa shortly after DPP Haji ordered his immediate arrest.

Authorities now believe Sonko was planning an escape to Tanzania before his dramatic arrest last Friday.

The Governor’s team of bodyguards are reported to have put up a fight with police at Voi road-block before being overpowered.

Sonko would refuse to board a police chopper which was ordered to airlift him to Nairobi when officers forcibly handcuffed him in a dramatic fashion.

Nine other suspects including county staff have also been arraigned in court to answer to the charges of corruption.
