Ruto-allied Senator Arrested

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei was on Tuesday arrested by Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI)

The Senator allied to Deputy President William Ruto was arrested over his hate speech utterances in his county where he said that the region was profiling those opposing the DP’s 2022 presidential bid.

Taking to Twitter to confirm the arrest the DCI tweeted: ” Hon. Samson Kiprotich CHERARGEI has been arrested by @DCI_Kenya Detectives following his hateful utterances at Kilibwoni Primary School on 17th August 2019.

“The suspect will be taken to court today to face charges of ethnic contempt c/section 62(1)……of the National Cohesion & Integration Act and Incitement to Violence contrary to section 96(a) of the Penal Code.”

The arrest comes three months after the senator was accused of inciting members of his tribe against other communities.

On August 20, Cherargei was arrested by DCI detectives who camped at his home for hours.

The Senator surrendered to police and was driven to the DCI offices in Nandi to record a statement and late taken to Kisumu Central Police Station.

Speaking at the funeral, of the late teacher Dominic Kiptoo Choge at Lelwak in O’lessos, Cherargei claimed that supporters of Deputy President were “marking and profiling” those opposed to his presidential bid.

He said that he will “deal with” those opposing DP Ruto.

However, the Senator was in later released, on the same day, on personal bond.
