NARC Kenya party leader Martha Karua on Tuesday said the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report is a disappointment to Kenyans adding that it offered nothing new.
Speaking to Citizen TV’s Daybreak show, the former presidential candidate said the majority of the recommendations were already in the public knowledge.
Karua also noted that the handshake and BBI are two different things that were meant to achieve a separate mission.
“There’s a difference between handshake & BBI. The handshake was necessary for calmness. The report is however underwhelming, it talks about things we already know, that have already been provided for with such as past injustices with TJRC,” said Karua.
Besides, the former Kirinyaga Gubernatorial candidate opposed the appointments of MPs to the cabinet saying it will affect its oversight roles.
According to Karua, the Parliament and the Executive are two distinct organs that have separate powers which should not be interfered with.
“Bringing cabinet ministers from Parliament, violateS the separation of power. Mixing government and Parliament takes away the effectiveness of oversight as that is asking the government that is already in Parliament to oversight itself,” added Karua.

About the simmering tension over which way forward in implementing the BBI report, Karua dismissed amendment of the constitution to accommodate the position of a Prime Minister.
She said the position was already in existence and there was no need to amend the law.
“There is no need for a constitutional amendment for a Prime Minister slot, what the BBI has proposed is a super minister who is in Parliament. We already have a similar situation with CS, Fred Matiang’i just that he is not in Parliament,” she said.
