Before this, the Reds had sweated in search of an equalizer following an incident that saw Napoli’s goal stands after a VAR check in the first half.

In the 21st minute, Virgil van Dijk was clearly fouled when heading the ball away but the referee didn’t give a free-kick.

Seconds later, Dries Merten fired Napoli into the lead following a VAR verdict which upheld the goal over a suspected foul and a potential offside.

Van Dijk initially appeared to be seriously hurt as he lay on the turf. Anfield held its breath – especially as they had just seen Fabinho limp off injured and was replaced by Georginio Wijnaldum.

But after the two VAR checks confirmed the goal stood, the Dutchman soon picked himself up and appeared to have fully recovered.

Liverpool fans might actually have been satisfied to see the goal given and Van Dijk injury-free rather than the other way around!

The Reds pushed hard in search of an equalizer in the first half but the visitors hanged on their lead into the half-time.

By this time, pressure was clearly mounting on Jurgen Klopp and he couldn’t just keep calm. One of the shouts at the officials on the touchline saw him get into the referee’s books.

After the Lovren’s goal, both teams searched for a winner to no avail. Even Mohamed Salah’s beautiful runs didn’t bear any fruits.
