Getting the news that you have cancer is a hard thing to process. In the last decade, cancer has taken more lives than any disease. It is the killer disease that scientists are trying to get a cure for.
While difficult, many have fought cancer and survived. Normally, the first thing most people get on is chemotherapy to try and kill the cells growing abnormally.
Chemotherapy is not easy and takes a toll on people. If you or your loved one are undergoing chemotherapy, here are a few helpful tips to help you get through.
Support system
Establishing a support system that can accompany you for the appointments is necessary. You are not as strong as you used to be and the treatments can get intense sometimes. Hence, you need a designated driver to take you home after. You also need a support system for emotional support.
Wear comfortable clothes
Wear clothes that give easy access to the body. Loose-fitting clothes are ideal especially if your treatment requires a port directly put into a vein.
Keep your body on a schedule
Always sleep and wake up at around the same time. It is also advisable to start working out.
Hydrate
Drink plenty of water before and after chemotherapy treatments.
Eat well
Do not start dieting when you are undergoing chemotherapy. This is because the drugs can really waste someone away, so always ensure you keep a balanced diet.
Avoid infections
When cancer hits, your immune system gets tampered with and it is easy for your body to get infections. These could cause a whole health problem on top of cancer. To avoid infections, keep your hands clean and stay away from crowds.
Ask Questions
Always ask questions when you are curious about the treatment. It is normal to be worried during chemotherapy and the doctors and nurses are always ready to help.
