Sonko’s Leadership at Stake as Nairobi Leaders Gang Up Against Him

Misfortunes facing Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko could have multiplied after a section of leaders from the county came out to question his way of leadership style.

Led by Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja and Dagoretti North Simba Arati, the leaders, on Thursday, held a press conference to condemn the governor, whom they accused of poor service delivery to the residents.

According to Sakaja, Sonko had failed in his mandate to fight off cartels in his county government, as well as making sure that all the money allocated to Nairobi county is fully utilized.

“Despite the Ksh52.5 billion from both sharable and own-source revenues, taps in the city still remain dry, garbage remains uncollected, sewage is flowing freely, feeder roads remain impassable and county residents are now moving out to seek health services from outside,” remarked Sakaja.

Sakaja revealed that as leaders, despite negotiating in the senate and national assembly a total of Ksh26.3 billion for Nairobi county in the 2017-2018 financial year, the governor did nothing to improve the situation in the city.

He further revealed that they allocated a total of Ksh15.8 billion for Nairobi county in 2018-2019 financial year. The leaders maintained they were ready to provide an alternative leadership for the county if the governor had been over defeated in running Nairobi.

Sakaja further claimed that the governor had not utilised a single cent in terms of development and service delivery as far as 2019 budget allocation is concerned.

MP Arati, on his part, promised that as Nairobi leaders, they will ensure that they are involved in all city’s budget allocations and that they will also have a say in how all the county money are going to be used to avoid misappropriations.

The leaders also demanded that all the county leaders, who had been demoted by the governor, be immediately reinstalled to speed up developments which had stalled in the county.

“Governor Sonko should come out and do away with ‘Mavipindiree‘ (dramas) in his government. A lot of developments that were initiated by former Governor Kidero have all stalled yet there are enough funds in the county. It is painful at times to be led by leaders who cannot reason,” stated Arati.

Arati promised to push on as Nairobi leaders until all the areas that have crumbled under Sonko’s leadership are rectified and residents get effective services from the county government.

The leaders included Langata MP Nixon Korir, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, Makadara MP George Aladwa among many others.
