KPL Side Set to Be Kicked Out of The League

Kenyan Premier League side Sony Sugar is set to be kicked out of the league after failing to honor a third successive league match.

The Migori County-based side arrived in Kericho for Wednesday’s league match against Zoo FC shortly after 4 pm when match officials had already issued a walk-over to the hosts for the match that was supposed to kick off at 3 PM.

Having failed to honor matches against Tusker FC and AFC Leopards earlier, the team will automatically be relegated to the second tier and fined.

Sony’s problems stem from financial struggles that have hit the sugar industry in the country. All teams sponsored by Sugar milling companies are experiencing the same challenges. Chemelil Sugar FC also failed to travel to Machakos on Wednesday for the match against KCB and one more walkover will see them kicked out as well. Nzoia Sugar too is struggling but unlike the other two, the Bungoma based team has not issued any walkover.

Things looked up for the James Nandwa side early this season when they secured what they thought to be a multi-million sponsorship deal with Hong Kong-based company, QuantDragon. It, however, emerged that the deal was all hot air as the company took off without remitting a penny, throwing the club into a state of confusion in the process.

Efforts by the club managers to salvage the situation proved futile as they could not secure a deal that would save the club from going down. It’s a familiar script as Mt. Kenya United went down in a similar way last season although the new second-tier side managed to honor matches until the final day although their final day results against Ulinzi Stars were canceled. Luckily for them, their fate had already been sealed as they finished bottom in the league.

Sony Sugar was formed in 1986 and has one Kenyan Premier League title to its name. The side won the 2005 KPL title under the guidance of former Kenyan international Francis Baraza. The team is known for horning young unknown players whom they have been taping from school.

Sources from the club, however, indicate that the club plans to appeal against the walkover dished to Zoo as they argue that they turned up for the game, albeit late.
