Amos Wako, Family Members Barred From Enterring the US

The United States government, on Monday, banned Busia Senator Amos Wako, his wife Flora Ngaira and son Julius from entering the US over graft claims while he was Attorney General.

In a statement, the US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said that the move sends a strong signal that the United States is a valuable partner in Kenya’s fight against corruption.

“Today, the Department designates former Kenyan Attorney General Amos Sitswila Wako due to his involvement in significant corruption.  This designation is made under Section 7031(c) of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2019 (Div. F, P.L. 116-6), as carried forward by the Continuing Appropriations Act, 2020 (Div. A, P.L. 116-59),” Pompeo said.

“The law also requires the Secretary of State to publicly or privately designate such officials and their immediate family members.  In addition to the designation of Mr. Wako, the Department is also publicly designating Wako’s wife, Flora Ngaira, and son, Julius Wako,” he added.

US Ambassador to Kenya Kyle McCarter, had on October 2019, promised that individuals implicated in corruption and drugs and their family members would not be allowed to step on American soil as President Donald Trump’s administration gets tough on Kenya.

“My message to them is simple: ‘Beware … We’ll look for you; we’ll come for you,” said Mr McCarter.

“If we have the ability to do it, we will do it.” On the ongoing war against corruption, Mr McCarter said the US administration has already stopped a senior personality — whom he did not name — from travelling to the US.

“This thievery has to stop. We shall not support anybody stealing money in Kenya to pay school fees in the US for their kids,” he said.

The US Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) hosted the Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti alongside Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji as part of the renewed efforts to streamline Kenya’s criminal justice system.
