Protesters Block Mai Mahiu Narok Road, Demand Compensation

Angry Suswa residents on Wednesday blocked the Mai Mahiu – Narok cutting off motorists who use the busy highway.

The residents who lit fires on the road demanded that the government compensates them before the dry port is built on the 78,000-acre Kedong ranch.

It is not the first time area residents, who will be affected by the construction of the multi-billion dry port, have voiced their opposition to the project.

Last month, families squatting on the ranch demanded better compensation from the government failure to which they vowed not to leave their land.

Their leaders also complained that the 4,000-acre land allocated to them by the government to settle the over 10,000 families is not enough.

They stated whereas they support the project, they would not move until they are well compensated.

The leaders said they would move to court to oppose the commencement of the project which President Uhuru Kenyatta launched in October.
