Moses Kuria Outlines 6 Measures to Improve Security Around JKUAT

Security Agencies met on Wednesday and outlined plans to improve security around Juja Town following Monday strike by Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture Technology (JKUAT) students over increasing cases of crime in the area.

The meeting came after Police Boss Hillary Mutyambai, disclosed on Wednesday, that three police officers have been interdicted for using excessive force against the protesting students.

In attendance were Central Regional Commissioner Wilfred Nyagwanga, Kiambu County Commissioner Wilson Wanyanga, JKUAT Vice Chancellor Victoria Ngumi, JKUAT student leader Titus Osoro and regional and county security commanders.

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria also attended the meeting and revealed the proposals arrived at to improve the security situation in Juja Town.

Below are the proposals as posted by Kuria on his Facebook Page:

1. There are serious security issues around Juja Town and more so areas with heavy students’ accommodation like Gachororo. The prevalence of the drugs menace around the area adds to this security challenge. We have agreed to mount a massive security operation to rid the area of crime and drugs comprehensively and with immediate effect.

2. All landlords who house students around JKUAT MUST be accredited by the University Management immediately or else they will face the full force of the law.

3. We will embark on an exercise to install security lights within JKUAT and around the areas hosting the student hostels outside the University.

4. The Students Leadership under President Osoro will sensitize the students’ community to utilise the SMS service 988 to report any cases of insecurity. This is an anonymous service that will be monitored in realtime by Security chiefs and the University Administration and it’s free of charge.

5. To improve communications between the Students Leadership and enhance peer to peer exchange and cross-university sharing of issues, JKUAT will host a meeting of all Presidents of Students Associations in all Public Universities on Friday 15th November 2019 under the Patronage of Education CS Prof George Magoha.

6. The JKUAT Senate will meet as soon as possible to review the situation and cause the re-opening of the University without further delay.
