Fire Burns Two Children after a Suspected Gas Explosion

Two children are fighting for their lives at JM Memorial Hospital after a fire razed their house at Vatican area in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County leaving them with serious burns.

The two children aged 12 and 11 years, had been left alone at home by their mother on Tuesday evening when the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire that left the two suffering severe burns has not yet been established as Kenya Power and Lighting Company disputed claims that the fire occurred because of faulty electrical connections.

“There seemed to be a problem with the wiring in my house, I spoke to the house manager and he said they would look into it but nothing was done,” lamented Ms. Wangeci Kariuki, the mother to the minors.

The two were rushed to the hospital, the same night, but could not receive immediate medical attention due to a go-slow by doctors who were protesting a pay dispute with the County government.

Dr. Mwangi Waithaka, the pediatrician claimed that the degree of the fire burns showed that the inferno was likely caused by a gas explosion.

“I have handled many cases that involve fire burns and I can validly confirm that this particular incident that caused grievous harm to these minors, was caused by a gas explosion,” the Doctor explained.

The children were to be transferred to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital earlier today but following their deteriorating condition medics were unable to make the transfers.
