2019 Census Results Released

President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially received the first report on the recently concluded 2019 census exercise conducted by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).

The data released Monday morning indicates that the country’s population now stands at 47, 564,296.

It also shows a near balance between the male and female population, with the former standing at 23,548,056 and the latter at 24,014,706.

The number of intersex people stands at 1,524.

Nairobi County emerged the most populous with 4,394,073 residents.

While handing over the report to the president, KNBS Director General Zachary Mwangi noted that the process had been carried out with high levels of transparency and professionalism, with local and international observers overseeing the process.

Kiambu, Nakuru, Kakamega, and Bungoma counties also recorded a high population while Lamu, Isiolo, Samburu, Tana River, and Taita Taveta recorded the lowest population in the enumeration exercise that ran from Aug. 24 to Aug. 28.

Accepting the report, Uhuru expressed his gratitude towards Kenyans who cooperated with enumerators to make the undertaking a success, as well as security officers who ensured safety during the exercise that at times took place during the wee hours of the night.

The president also hailed local universities and the KBS for developing the devices and software used in the Census, which is the first-ever to be conducted under the current Constitution.

He added that the data captured during the exercise will be used in economic planning and implementation of development programs across the country by the Government under the Big 4 Agenda.
