Near-death Experience for Kenya Mpya Passengers After Accident

Passengers aboard a Kenya Mpya bus headed to Nairobi on Thursday escaped death by a whisker after the vehicle landed in a ditch at Kastemil area, along Thika Road.

Photos taken at the scene of the accident show the bus lying squarely in the ditch on its right side as first responders evacuate passengers through the back window.

No casualties were reported in the afternoon incident whose cause is yet to be established.

It is suspected that the bus was pushed off the service lane by another one headed in the same direction.

Relevant authorities, including the Kenya National Highways Authority arrived at the scene of the accident in which four people are reported to have sustained minor injuries.

Although cost friendly for commuters, Kenya Mpya is one of the most dreaded matatu saccos plying Thika Road, owing to the high number of accidents caused by alleged carelessness and disregard for traffic rules by its drivers.

In 2017, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) suspended the sacco after a public outcry over indiscipline amongst the crews operating its fleet.

In April, the Sacco hit the headlines yet again after one of its buses crushed a pedestrian’s leg at Engen area near Kenyatta University.

The woman, who was crossing the road when the speeding vehicle hit her, had her leg amputated following the tragic incident.

Meanwhile, just a few kilometres away, a trailer overturned at the Roasters roundabout, dropping a container that blocked the road towards Mountain Mall temporarily.
