Mt Kenya MPs Slap Uhuru, Raila with 3 Conditions to Support BBI

Members of Parliament drawn from the Mt Kenya region have vowed to support the proposals by the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) only if only views from the region are factored in the final report.

The MPs who addressed journalists from Parliament Buildings on Thursday issued irreducible minimums as a requirement for the support of the BBI proposals.

Chief among the concerns the MPs raised was the representation of their people in Parliament.

“We are concerned about the underrepresentation of our people at all levels, compared to the population and the number of voters,” they said in a press release to newsrooms.

They said they addressed the press because of the need to ensure that views from the Mt Kenya region are fully represented as per their earlier recommendations to the BBI committee.

They additionally demanded that any constitutional review must address the fair distribution of resources with regards to the number of people in a given area.

However, the MPs said that they understand the pressing need of the country to foster cohesion and unity of purpose for the prosperity of Kenyans and the provision of a conducive business environment.

“We fully understand the need for inclusivity and its import to the prosperity of our great nation, and that this must address all the areas with regards to leadership, representation, resource allocation, and structure of government”.

They said upon the release of the BBI report, they shall retreat to study it and thereafter give directions to their followers based on the recommendations.
