ATM Heist: More Security Guards Caught in Action

As the government intensifies the crackdown on ATM fraud, it is emerging that the security guards and police officers charged with safeguarding Kenyans’ bank assets are the ones actually carrying out the now rampant heists.

On Tuesday, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers arrested two employees of security firms alongside two other individuals while attempting to steal money from an ATM machine in Ruiru, Kiambu.

This brings to 9 the total of security officers, including police officers, arrested in connection to ATM theft in October alone.

Last week, the DCI released footage of two security guards caught in the action stealing Ksh5000 from a customer’s account at a Family Bank ATM.

Mr. Robert Mwaura Mwita- a suspect linked to various cases of MPESA FRAUD in which members of the public have been defrauded MILLIONS of shillings was arrested yesterday by DCI Detectives after an assiduous operation. The suspect has been working in cahoot with security guards manning various ATMs whom he had recruited to withdraw money after sending them withdrawal secret codes. Upon withdrawing the money conned from unsuspecting members of the public, the said guards have been taking their agreed upon portion & sending the rest to Mwaura, the prime suspect. DCI Detectives- through intelligence- were able to NAB one of the suspects’ in the act (as shown in the videos) & later the prime suspect. Further investigations showed that the two guards; Stanley Nyakundi & Godfrey Masinde Simiyu had in the month of September alone, sent over Ksh. 2.2 Million to the prime suspect(Robert Mwaura Mwita). The suspects are in lawful custody and will be arraigned on Tuesday to answer to appropriate charges.

It is believed that the two, part of a theft ring comprised of bank security guards run by one Mwaura Mwita, had in the month of September stolen over Ksh2 million using withdrawal codes generated by Mwita.

The three individuals have since been arrested.

According to the DCI, the suspects arrested on Tuesday were employees of KK Security Runda, and G4S Ruiru.

On October 9, five police officers were arrested in Machakos for allegedly stealing Ksh268,000 from a KCB Bank ATM.

The 5 comprised a constable, a corporal, an APC, and prison warders.

In September, four police officers, including a KDF soldier, were arrested in connection to the theft of Ksh74 million from an Equity Bank ATM in Nairobi West.

Barclays Bank, where the Tuesday theft attempt occurred, has been the subject of several ATM heists in 2019, losing about Ksh11 million in an April robbery.
