President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday dispelled rumours that he might consider occupying a new position after the end of his second term in 2022.

The head of state made the remarks while addressing a crowd that turned up to witness the launch of the JKIA–Westlands Highway in Nairobi.

Uhuru dismissed claims that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) is meant to create a position for him and assured that he will leave office once his term is over.

BBI si ya kupea Uhuru kazi, mimi nimechoka. BBI niyakuhakikisha mkenya hatamwaga damu tena wakati wa uchaguzi, msidanganywe na matapeli huku nje (BBI isn’t meant to create a position for me after 2022, it’s meant to avoid violence during future elections, don’t fall for lies),” he indicated.

The BBI team is expected to hand over the report to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga during the Madaraka Day Celebrations which will be held on 1st June in Mombasa County.

The team, which was formed on March 9, 2019, after President Uhuru and Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga handshake has been on the receiving end of a section of political leaders.

Deputy President William Ruto and his allies have openly criticised BBI on the narrative that it is meant to create more executives powers.

While speaking in Uasin Gishu County in late August, DP Ruto termed the BBI as a political ploy aimed at benefiting a few individuals at the expense of Kenyans.

Among the positions the BBI is speculated to include in the recommendations is the creation of the position of an executive prime minister.
