President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday launched the phase 2A of the Standard Gauge Railway.

The president was accompanied by first lady Margaret Kenyatta.

The phase extends the line from Nairobi to Suswa. Two trains will ferry passengers to four stations namely Ongata Rongai, Ngong, Maai Mahiu and Suswa.

The Head of State also took a swipe at critics who have labelled the extension as ‘a train to nowhere’ saying that it will provide an alternative mode of transport to Kenyans.

“Those who want to use the train will use it. Those who don’t will use other means,” he explained.

The line is estimated to have cost the taxpayers Ksh150 billion.
