Sonko Likens Himself to Donald Trump With His Excessive Foreign Trips

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been away from actively running the county for the last two weeks despite mega problems facing the city recently.

Sonko has visited several countries abroad including Dubai, Italy and France in spite of the aftermath of corruption claims against his officials, protests in the County Assembly and a school tragedy two weeks ago.

Taking to social media on Tuesday morning, the flamboyant governor used a long post to explain to Nairobi residents his reasons for absenteeism.

“As Governor, I have also made several crucial official trips to represent Nairobi City around the world in the last 2 Years. For instance, I honoured an invitation by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly to represent all Africa Cities at their meeting in New York. I have also been to London alongside other leaders of African Cities to attend a key Conference. Where after my presentation we successfully got a grant of 500,000,000/= for acquiring of HIV tests kits from Elton John foundation,” Sonko’s post reads in part.

While likening himself to US US President Donald Trump who makes several foreign trips, Sonko believes that it is important for him as the Nairobi Governor to get out there and interact with other world city leaders and get to see or learn what they are doing differently in their respective cities for a change.

“In 2017, US President Donald Trump made several foreign trips, one from 20th to 27th May (8 Days) where he visited a number of Middle East Countries and another in November 5th to 14th (10 Days) visiting Asia, the Korea Peninsula and China. In 2018, Trump went for several foreign trips with one lasting from June 7th to 16th (9 Days) in Europe.

In the last week starting Monday 7th October, I have been out of the country on an official tour where I visited Europe (France) Montpellier, Copenhagen (Denmark) and Asia (South Korea) to attend key note events where other major cities of the world were represented by my counterparts,” the governor said.

He also took a jab at his critics over his failure to appoint a deputy governor who could have helped run the county in his absence. Governor Sonko has been without a deputy for 19 months now and with an embattled County Assembly Speaker who has not steered operations for over a year now.

“To my beloved critics who I love alot for making me stronger and even more stronger everyday and who say I could have made a difference if I was around during the skirmishes that happened at the County Assembly, I would to tell them Mimi sio Mungu ama Malaika kujua what will happen while I’m away. Majority of them wanasema ati lack of Deputy Governor. Namimi nawaambia petition the Senate and National assembly to expedite the county Government amendment bill ikue assented to by the President niwapatie Deputy Governor,” he said.

He, however, promised to address the ongoing stalemate at the county assembly and other issues when he jets back.
