Itumbi Charged Afresh Over DP Ruto Fake Assassination Letter

State House director of digital media Dennis Itumbi and co-accused Samuel Gateri have pleaded not guilty to fresh charges of publishing a false letter alleging a plan to assassinate Deputy President William Ruto.

The duo who appeared before Magistrate Martha Mutuku on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to drafting the fake document.

The charge sheet indicated that Itumbi and the co-accused on or before June 201, 2019 published a fake letter dated May 30, 2019, with the motive to cause anxiety to the general public.

Investigations by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) established that the letter was drafted at a cyber café in Langata.

The letter claimed that three cabinet secretaries and some political leaders from Central Kenya had a meeting at Hotel La Mada where they plotted to kill the Deputy President.

The three CSs’ who were summoned by the DCI as part of the investigations denied the allegations.

On July 2, detectives arrested Samuel Gateri and confiscated two phones from him while investigating the source of the fake letter.

Upon arrest, Gateri led the detectives to Itumbi.

On July 22, Itumbi was charged before the court for publishing the fake letter and reprogramming a mobile device.

The court released him on Ksh100,000 cash bail and barred him from posting about the case on his social media platforms.

on September 12, Gateri was charged with two counts for publishing a fake document and falsifying that it was from a Cabinet Secretary.

He was also released on Ksh100,000 cash bail.
