Kenyan Brigid Kosgeishattered a 16-year-old world record in the women’s marathon, winning the Chicago Marathon in 2:14:04 on Sunday.
Kosgei, who won Chicago in 2018 and the London Marathon in April, came in highly favored. The 25-year-old turned up with the fastest half-marathon ever by a woman (by 23 seconds) on Sept. 8 on a non-record-eligible course.
Kenyan Lawrence Cheronowon the men’s race by one second over Ethiopian Dejene Debela in an unofficial 2:05:45. This comes barely a day after Eliud Kipchoge became the first man to run a marathon in under 2 hours in INEOS Austria.
Kosgei appeared to beat the all-time record, which stood at 2:15:25 thanks to Paula Radcliffe’s blistering performance in the 2003 London Marathon, by several seconds. Kosgei’s personal record time was previously 2:18:20, which she set earlier this year in the London Marathon.
Kosgei has literally been unbeatable in 2019.
