A number of Churches drawn from Central Kenya regions of Kiambu and Murang’a have now called on the government to create a Ministry of Religion.

The Churches through their leaders have called on the government to cease registering them as a society as it is the case now and instead give them their own ministry that will have a Cabinet Secretary, Principal Secretary and officers for all the other departments just like it is the case with the now available Ministerial dockets.

Speaking at the Calvary Chosen Centre in Thika, Bishop David Ngari claimed that they had been left out of the ongoing constitutional debate while at the same time revealing that they support the Building Bridges Initiative.

“The church should not be registered as a society as it is the case now, and should be removed from the Attorney-General’s docket and appended to a new ministry which will regulate the church in matters pertaining to religion,” Said Ngari.

He also lauded the Catholic Church for the bold stand it took with regards to church donations.

“As members of the clergy, we support the move by our Catholic brethren. The church has the moral authority to defeat the spirit of corruption, we should lead from the front,” he said.

The Catholic Church has taken a firm stand over church donations and has called on anyone interested in donating to the church to do so through the electronic transfer of cash.

With this, the church argues that a clear trail of donations will be left and this will inturn help in accountability.

The Church also banned Politicking in the places of worship.

“Henceforth, fundraisers in the church will be done by mobile money transfer or by cheque. This will avoid handling of huge amounts of cash and give a clear trail of the donors,” Said Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) Chairman Bishop Philip Anyolo.

A Section of politicians have welcomed the move by the catholic church while some have blasted the church over what they termed as double standards.
