Time for Fans to Genuinely Stand with Broke Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia are back to square one following the exit of Sportpesa who have been their sponsors since 2016. Forget about the Keroche deal. It was meant to cater for just a day when K’Ogalo were hosting Algerian side USM Alger in their Caf Champions league return leg, and only fingers can remain crossed with the hopes that the brewery firm agrees to a long-term sponsorship package.

While still on the continental match, the club’s CEO Lordvick Aduda sent a chilling message to the fans after the encounter. A message which easily and speedily circulated on social media. A message whose first objective-reaching most Gor Mahia fans, was realized, but whose second objective-to act, could still be debatable. He categorically castigated fans for wanting to cause trouble due to the particular 2-0 (6-1 aggregate) loss and for wanting to always watch their local and international matches without paying a penny.

“The conduct of our fans cannot be tolerated anymore and now it is evident some of them have turned into criminals. Why should they use acts of hooliganism to vent their anger after losing a match? I was shocked that they broke the gate, destroyed chairs and threw stones in the stadium while hurling abuses at the club officials. It is not right at all.

Which brand can accept such kind of behaviour and still invest in the club? It is good to tell them the truth even if I will be crucified. Unless they style up, we are working on a mode of dealing with their criminal acts.

“Gor Mahia fans don’t learn and their actions have cost the team a lot in the recent past. Last season we had to pay Sh2.5 million as fine yet they are the ones yapping all over that the officials misuse club’s money. They are the ones who elected the current office bearers and are those fines not paid from the club coffers?

“Some fans send one shilling to buy a ticket for a match worth Sh200 and above while others use forwarded text messages to show they have paid. We are fed up with their behaviour and something has to be done to stop them,” his statement read.

From the statement, and at this time when the club is basically broke, it should be a responsibility of the fans to completely rally behind this giant club.

Fans should be responsible to buy tickets in large numbers, make donations, stop hooliganisms and be honest while buying online tickets. This way, the club can stand on its feet for not only the local league but also the continental showpieces.

It is for the second time, that Gor Maha dropped from Caf Champions league to Africa’s second club level competition Caf Confederations Cup, and Organizing Secretary Judith Nyangi believes much can be done at the continentals if there is enough financial support.

“Gor Mahia is bigger than the local league right now. It represents Kenya at continentals and the African competitors know exactly how lethal we are. But we’re always brought down by financial issues. Our fans have tried to help us but I would urge them to do more especially at this time where we don’t have a sponsor. I’m sure the club can perform better in the continental competitions if we have enough money,” Nyangi told Opera News.
